 A wonderful Proof Penny -  1797 (late Soho), in bronzed-copper, edge plain, 25.24g/6h (BMC 1109 [KP 14]; Selig –; S 3777).

 The reverse of the halpenny shows a ship to the left of Britannia. By looking through a loupe and examining the length of the hull of the ship you will be able to see that there are 6 'incuse' or 6 small indentations which are the ship's gunports.

A wonderful example with near full red lustre. A harder coin to pin down - to date I have only ever had two examples.

1797 BRONZED PROOF PENNY (PECK 1109)

An exploded KH 14 Obverse.

as type 4 small draped bust: large letters.

Details as follows:

1. Wreath with 10 leaves and 2 berries: the upper berry is double cut

2. K  ∴ on shoulder; the dots are of equal size and rather large.

3. The tip of the upper loose end of the tie riband points downwards.

4. The ermined borders of the drapery are sharpley cut.

Details as follows:


1. Middle prong of trident points to left of first limb of N.

2. ∴ (incuse) on rock to right; SOHO below shield.

3. The six with 6 incuse gunports is weak, the bowsprit and much of the rigging is worn away.

4. About a third of the sea beneath the ship is blank, and there are lapped areas under Britannia's armpit and her waste.

5. The olive branch bears 10 leaves, several of which are detached.

Details as follows:

1. Wreath with 11 leaves and 2 berries, the upper one with only a trace of a stem.

2. K ∴ on shoulder (slight variations in position) 

3. The tip of the upper loose end of the tie - riband points outwards.

Details as follows:


1. Middle prong of trident points to left of first limb of N.

2. ∴ (incuse) on rock to right; SOHO below shield.

3. The six with 6 incuse gunports and an ensign at the stern, there are numerous variations on the design of the ship, the arrnagement of the rigging and the rendering of the sea.

4. The waves are usually not crested with foam.

5. The olive branch bears 10 leaves, (slight variation in positions)
